Our Beautiful Historic Building

Originally established as Quirk’s Commercial Hotel in 1911, this wooden building sadly burnt down just 5 years after it was built, taking down a whole block of buildings along The Strand in Tauranga.

A new hotel was built on the site and opened on the 2nd of September, 1918. This is the construction as we know it today. In the newspapers it was promoted as the most fire proof building in Tauranga being built from concrete foundations and walls.

At that time, the gentlemen’s bar was strictly only accessible for men and was a popular meeting place in this bustling port town.

Returning St Amand to Glory

In 2019, Sarah Meadows and Matt Young took the opportunity to purchase the entire building. In honour of the history of the St Amand, they thought it only fitting that our interior styling should also match the era in which this grand old girl was founded.

Major construction has been done to make the building earthquake proof and the interior has had extensive remodelling and refurbishing completed.

Home to WanderlustNZ Hostel and St Amand Events Venue, this is the oldest remaining hotel in Tauranga.
